help you fix your problem Make sure there is a lowercase letter before - and a lowercase letter after the -+space, capture the letters and use backreferences to get these letters back after replacement:
code :
([a-z])- ([a-z])
import re
s = 'Analysis of two high reso- lution nucleosome maps revealed strong signals that even though they do not constitute a definite proof are at least consistent with such a view. Taken together, all these findings sug- gest the intriguing possibility that nucleosome positions are the product of a mechanical evolu- tion of DNA molecules.'
s = re.sub(r'([a-z])- ([a-z])', r'\1\2', s)
print(s)

hop of those help? I am trying to write a regular expression, in java, that matches words and hyphenated words. So far I have:
code :
\p{L}+(?:-\n?\p{L}+)*
\   /^\ /^\ /\   /^^^
 \ / | | | |  \ / |||
  | | | | | | ||`- Previous can repeat 0 or more times (group of literal '-', optional new-line and one or more of any letter (upper/lower case))
  |  | | | |   |  |`-- End first non-capture group
  |  | | | |   |  `--- Match one or more of previous (any letter, upper/lower case)
  |  | | | |   `------ Match any letter (upper/lower case)
  |  | | | `---------- Match a single new-line (optional because of `?`)
  |  | | `------------ Literal '-'
  |  | `-------------- Start first non-capture group
  | `---------------- Match one or more of previous (any letter between A-Z (upper/lower case))
  `------------------- Match any letter (upper/lower case)

This might help you I have a string sentence structure such as this: , If you're willing to change the notation, you have two options:
code :
>>> 'Starting in {Duration}, the {Noun} will be {Adjective}'.format(Duration='24 hours', Noun='Coffee Maker', Adjective='broken')
'Starting in 24 hours, the Coffee Maker will be broken'
>>> 'Starting in %(Duration)s, the %(Noun)s will be %(Adjective)s' % dict(Duration='24 hours', Noun='Coffee Maker', Adjective='broken')
'Starting in 24 hours, the Coffee Maker will be broken'
>>> from django.template import Context, Template
>>> t = Template('Starting in {{Duration}}, the {{Noun}} will be {{Adjective}}')
>>> c = Context(dict(Duration='24 hours', Noun='Coffee Maker', Adjective='broken'))
>>> t.render(c)
u'Starting in 24 hours, the Coffee Maker will be broken'

may help you . I'm looking for a regular expression that will split a sentence into words, by using both spaces and hyphens as the character to split at. i.e. "This is over-done" should return 4 words (this, is, over, done) , This should work:
code :
\b([^-\s]+)\b

fixed the issue. Will look into that further Marius is correct that the major error is that you need to iterate over the length of the arrays. A different way than mapping would be to use erase() and insert() where you used replace(). replace() does not account for the lengths of the strings being different, but removing a substring and then adding in a new substring will. This can be done as follows
code :
for (int i = 0; i < 12; i++)
{
    found = s.find(normal[i]);

    // Locate the substring to replace
    int pos = s.find( normal[i], found );
    if( pos == string::npos ) break;
    // Replace by erasing and inserting
    s.erase( pos, normal[i].length() );
    s.insert( pos, pirate[i] );
}

should help you out You can use a list comprehension with series.get for all items after splitting each row:
code :
s=df2.set_index('word')['index']
final=df1.assign(index=[[s.get(a) for a in i.split()] for i in df1['sentences']])
                         sentences                   index
0  yes good bye how should and bye  [4, 6, 5, 2, 3, 10, 5]
1                       bye should                  [5, 3]
2                         good bye                  [6, 5]
