python 2.7: Debugging an if-else statement (syntax error)

Does that help One thing that's common in Python is strange syntax errors due to strange white spaces. This is likely in a case like this, but it is impossible to say for certain, because white spaces simply do not translate very well during copy paste. I copy pasted your code, and it worked, proving there's no syntax errors. And since it solved your problem I also put it here as a reminder for others.
Often this problem gets solved by simply removing the newline and then put it back again.

I think the issue was by ths following , I am teaching myself some Python and I have come across a problem which is probably plainly obvious, except that I can't see it and I need another pair of eyes. , The line:
code :
W = Label(main, text = "No, It's "+str(states[state])

it should still fix some issue In Python 3, print is a function, you need to call it like print("hello world").
Python 2.7.8 print statement “Syntax Error: invalid syntax” in terminal (ubuntu 14.04) but running well on vim, why?

I wish this helpful for you The REPL (read-evaluate-print-loop) can't look ahead at the next line to see if the loop ends the same way that the normal parser can. In other words, when python's normal parser parses your file, it sees the dedent and knows that the loop ends after sum+=num. When the REPL gets to the same line, it has no way of knowing if there should be another statement so it assumes that there is another statement. The way to tell the REPL that this is the terminal line of a loop (or, more generally, the end of any suite of commands) is to enter a blank line.

I think the issue was by ths following , You can use from __future__ import print_function in python-2 to enable yourself to use python3 print feature.

this one helps. I tried the following code: , Oversimplifying slightly, your code:
code :
with x as 1:
    y = 1
try:
    1 = x.__enter__()
    y = 1
finally:
    1.__exit__()
