around this issue The has_many association tells Rails that the objects are related and adds methods to the object for querying the associated objects. You could live without it, but it makes things easier.
See the first chapter here: http://guides.rubyonrails.org/v2.3.11/association_basics.html

may help you . Hi I have three tables like the following: , You would usually have the child as a plural object:
code :
class Workitem < ActiveRecord::Base
  has_many :efforts
  attr_protected
end

class Person < ActiveRecord::Base
  attr_accessible :given_name, :mgrid, :surname, :id
  has_many :efforts
end
class Foo < ActiveRecord::Base
  has_many :foo_bar
  has_many :bars, through => :foo_bar
end

class Bar < ActiveRecord::Base
  has_many :foo_bar
  has_many :foos, through => :foo_bar
end

class FooBar
  belongs_to :foo
  belongs_to :bar
end

Any of those help You can specify which columns are to be used as foreign and primary key for association:
code :
class Foo < ActiveRecord::Base
  has_many :foo_statuses, foreign_key: :foo_name, primary_key: :name
end

class FooStatus < ActiveReocrd::Base
  belongs_to :foo, foreign_key: :foo_name, primary_key: :name
end

How does Rails maintain a has_one relationship along a has_many relationship of the same type

Hope this helps This is normal behaviour, because has_many and has_one have the same concept in DB, they are the relation having 0...n (zero to many) others!
But the different is meaning:
code :
=> SELECT  "bars".* FROM "bars" WHERE "bars"."foo_id" = $1 LIMIT 1  [["foo_id", 234]]
=> SELECT  "bars".* FROM "bars" WHERE "bars"."foo_id" = $1 [["foo_id", 234]]

this one helps. I have 3 models , I'm not totally sure, but it seems this is what you're looking for:
code :
User
  has_one :quiz
  has_many :answers
  has_many :answered_quizzes, through: :answers, source: :quiz

Quiz
  belongs_to :user
  has_many :answers

Answer
  belongs_to :quiz
  belongs_to :user
